Display Troubleshooting

For example if the monitor screen starts to flicker, it would mean that high chance the monitor is faulty, or the graphic card time is up (Note that this graphic card is refering to external card, not the on board graphics). To confirm the fault, the best way is use another monitor to test out. However, not many have this option of having a spare monitor lying around to use. Another alternative is to use the on board graphics to output to the monitor.

From this test, there will be two scenario
A) If the monitor continues to flicker, it is narrowed down to the monitor and cable fault. But in rare cases, the on board graphics might also be fault, but I will not cover that here.
B) If the flicker disappears, it narrows down to graphic card or maybe the graphic card slot.

For scenario A, the next test would be just changing the cable with another spare cable, or swap the video input with another one (DVI uses white cable heads, VGA uses blue cable heads, HDMI uses black cable heads). From here, you should be able to tell whether the cable or the monitor is faulty.

For scenario B, this would be much more difficult to determine the cause. The only way is to use the graphic card on another motherboard to test it out. If the graphic card does not work properly on another motherboard, that's good new because all you need to do is to change the graphic card or stick with the on board graphics. If the graphic card is working fine, then bad news because you need to change the whole motherboard or use the board graphics.

Things to be careful with when removing the graphic card, is to make sure the locking mechanism is removed. There is two locks to remove, one is from the casing, and the other is from the motherboard. Due to difference of the locking mechanism for individual casing, I will not discuss about this lock. For the motherboard lock, its mechanism are more similar to each others brand. Its usually just a small white catch, shown in the picture below. To unlock it, its just a simple push or pull.
